A community where all children can grow up being safe, healthy and
loved.
Finding the way forward with our community to protect children, to
support all children and strengthen families, and to develop a caring
environment for children.
Family and Children's Services is the Children's Aid Society for
the Region of Waterloo. We are incorporated as a charitable, non-profit
social service agency working under the authority of Ontario child
welfare legislation.
Our Foundation
Established in 1992, the Family and Children's Services Foundation
was created to support the children and the families who require
the care of Family and Children's Services of Waterloo Region. Along
with its statutory responsibility to protect children in danger
of physical and emotional harm, the FCS agency, itself a charitable,
nonprofit social service organization, provides children with a
nurturing environment in which to heal and grow, and provides parents
with the help and opportunities they need to create a better life
for their families.

A young girl from Cambridge created
the Family and Children’s Services logo in 1991. Her playful
drawing portrays a group of children frolicking below a rainbow--the
symbol of hope. Encircling its brilliant arcs is our motto: Together
for Children.
An
important part of our visual identity are the whimsical characters
created by local artist, Sue Wicks. Sue’s commitment to children
began in her youth when she went to work in an orphanage in Port au
Prince, Haiti. Inspired by the courageous spirits of these children,
Sue later enrolled in Early Childhood Education, fulfilling her dream
of helping children by becoming a preschool teacher. In 1989, she
successfully brought together her two passions—children and
the environment—to create a series of children’s books
dedicated to educating children on the importance of saving Planet
Earth. The series, Katie
and Orbie, was a national success. Following that, Sue collaborated with her father, legendary artist Ben Wicks, to created
a Katie and Orbie television series about friendship. The series continues
to air on P.B.S. and the French Channel. |

Sue's characters can be seen throughout
this website and around the many walls of Family & Children’s
Services. Children visiting the agency are greeted with the playful
characters that are “just my size”. Workers often have
to participate in judging activities, as the eager children stand
(with a generous helping of their tippie toes) to see who is taller—the
characters or them! Her characters are brought to life with the help
of Dave Sopha, a talented local Cambridge artist. |
